Peter Cooper has a point. If he's anti-internet, it's useless to sign up for him. But for the general masses' awareness, it is an important step. You will get heard. Just keep up the good work and enthusiasm.

I will carry on moaning too, of course. Shame about your MP. Anti-internet?! Presumably he is clinically insane.

I'm not going to bother with signing up or doing anything with my local MP. He's already said in the paper that he's anti-Internet, so it's a bit of a losing battle ;-) I think he's been MP here for about 30 years or something, so I'll just wait for him to die, and then perhaps we'll get a more progressive MP!

Peter Cooper has voiced his concerns over today's news stories on the BBC about the police being given powers to take fingerprints from drivers (and pedestrians they suspect of criminal activity). Like Peter, I think this is an absolute disgrace, and a further invasion of our privacy. I am becoming increasingly concerned about what's happening in the UK, and the amount of legislation being passed in the name of anti-terrorism.

Anyway, I decided it's high time I did something concrete. So I signed up with TheyWorkForYou.com and sent an email to Richard Burden, my local MP, expressing these concerns. This is a great site (I'm sure many of you have already used it), and I was particularly interested to see how Mr. Burden has voted on most issues. He seems to be on my wavelength for many policies, but has voted very strongly for the introduction of ID cards (something else I totally disagree with). Disappointing. I also signed up for the I'd like to hear what you're up to email; as I was the 25th person to sign up, he will now be sent an email which says "25 of your constituents would like to know what you're up to." So I anticipate a response before too long. At least it feels like I'm doing something to get myself heard.

I also had a look at the list of MPs who've been sent an email saying "your constituents would like to hear from you". George Galloway has been sent 5 such emails (as have many others), has had 153 people sign up to hear from him, and hasn't responded once. There's democracy for you. Some have a much better record; for example, one MP received one email and has sent 7 responses. Very interesting.
