I joined today and found the same problem with amazon importing. i thought it was hanging, didn't click twice as it told me not to, and the connection went dead after 20 minutes so nothing must have been happening.

it's a nice idea though - i told paul to develop his sooner though damn it!

Gifttagging

Gifttagging is a neat idea, and one which needs a good implementation. It's basically a wish list (like Amazon's) which you can use with any online shop. I have a couple of problems with it, and can't say it's great (yet), but it looks promising.

Firstly, I fail to see how you can mark whether you have bought something for somebody. Say I know my sister wants a book from some website and I buy it for her: I can't then let the Gifttagging site know that I've done this, so potentially someone else could also buy it. Around Christmas, this could create nightmares. I already have enough trouble with my Dad looking at my Amazon wish-list, then buying me CDs from CD Wow or wherever, someone else getting it from Amazon, and me ending up with duplicates. Perhaps some method of letting people with specified email addresses mark items as "bought"? (This needs to be separated from the "I have" list, so that I can get a surprise on Christmas morning.)

Another gripe is that it screwed up importing my Amazon wish-list, and I got everything twice (the lack of feedback from the application while loading the wish-list caused this, as I thought it was hanging and clicked twice). When I deleted it, I lost the Amazon import facility altogether. A simple progress indicator could have prevented this.

Finally, the bookmarklet is pretty dumb, and even with Amazon will not import the name of the item and price for you. As Amazon layouts are pretty standard (though not easy to parse, as they aren't sensible), I expected a bit more from it.

Still, I'll keep an eye on it, and hopefully it will mature into something genuinely useful. (I'm particularly hopeful because they are a UK company. Good luck! :)
